MANILA, Philippines — A recent Octa Research survey revealed that 80% of Filipinos believe Vice President Sara Duterte should face an impeachment trial in the Senate.
The nationwide survey, conducted from July 12 to 17, polled 1,200 adult respondents, just days before the Supreme Court declared the impeachment case against Duterte invalid.
According to Octa’s report released Sunday, only 14% of respondents opposed an impeachment trial, while 7% remained undecided or declined to answer.
“Support cuts across all regions and socio-economic classes. Regional backing ranges from 69% in Mindanao to a high of 92% in the Visayas, while support across socio-economic groups remains both strong and consistent, ranging from 78% to 80%,” Octa stated.
The research group also noted that 97% of adult Filipinos were aware of the impeachment process against Duterte.
Reason Behind the Support
Among those supporting a Senate trial, 59% said the vice president should face the charges, clear her name, and prove her fitness to remain in office.
“This remains the leading reason across all major regions and socio-economic classes,” Octa added.
Background on Impeachment
In February, the House of Representatives approved Articles of Impeachment against Duterte, citing alleged misuse of confidential funds and other issues.
However, the Supreme Court’s recent ruling declared the impeachment proceedings unconstitutional, effectively halting the process.
Despite the decision, House leaders have announced plans to appeal the Supreme Court’s ruling.
