Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” Lacson has been named the new chair of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, further strengthening his role in the chamber’s oversight functions.
Lacson’s appointment came on September 8, 2025, as part of the sweeping leadership changes that installed Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III as Senate President. He succeeds Senator Rodante Marcoleta, who was unseated from the influential panel.
The Blue Ribbon Committee, officially known as the Committee on Accountability of Public Officers and Investigations, is one of the most powerful bodies in the Senate. It is tasked with probing alleged anomalies in government, often leading to major policy debates and political showdowns.
Sotto explained that the committee is traditionally chaired by a member of the Senate majority bloc, a condition Marcoleta did not meet. Lacson, a veteran legislator and former national police chief, was thus tapped to take the helm.
The leadership shake-up comes at a crucial time, as the committee is handling sensitive investigations, including the alleged irregularities in flood-control projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Lacson, who has long been known for his tough stance on corruption and fiscal accountability, is expected to bring a stricter and more methodical style of oversight. Political observers say his appointment signals that the Senate majority wants sharper scrutiny of public funds and stronger checks on government spending.
With Lacson at the helm, the Blue Ribbon Committee is anticipated to play an even bigger role in shaping the direction of the Senate’s investigative work under the new leadership.
