MANILA, Philippines — The Senate has postponed the scheduled presentation of impeachment charges against Vice President Sara Duterte from June 2 to June 11, Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero confirmed.
The delay comes as the 19th Congress nears its sine die adjournment on June 14.
In a letter addressed to House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Escudero explained that both chambers of Congress need to focus on passing key items in the administration’s legislative agenda before the session ends.
Escudero also noted the Senate’s responsibility to review and confirm over 200 presidential appointments through the Commission on Appointments, including cabinet secretaries, constitutional commission officials, diplomats, and military personnel.
“With only six session days remaining, prioritizing these legislative measures is vital to align with the administration’s goal of responding to the people’s needs and expectations,” Escudero wrote.
He referenced the recent Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) meeting, where both legislative and executive branches committed to pushing through priority bills before the adjournment.
Among the measures targeted for passage are:
-
Revisions to the Foreign Investors’ Long-Term Lease Act
-
The E-Governance Act
-
The Open Access in Data Transmission bill
-
The Rationalization of the Mining Fiscal Regime
-
Amendments to the Universal Health Care Act
-
Establishment of the Virology Institute of the Philippines
-
The Government Optimization Act
-
Revisions to the Right-of-Way Act
-
Legislation setting fixed terms for Barangay and SK officials
-
Judicial fiscal autonomy
-
A tax on denatured alcohol
-
The Anti-POGO Act
Escudero emphasized that reviewing the pending appointments and passing these priority bills must take precedence over the impeachment proceedings, given the limited time left in the legislative calendar.
