The Senate is set to officially receive the impeachment charges against Vice President Sara Duterte from the House of Representatives on June 2, 2025, with the impeachment court to be convened the following day.
In a formal communication to House Speaker Martin Romualdez dated May 19, Senate President Chiz Escudero confirmed the chamber’s readiness to accept the Articles of Impeachment and proceed with the next steps in the process.
“Pursuant to Rule I of the Rules of Procedure on Impeachment Trials, we would like to inform your good office that… the Senate shall be ready to receive the House of Representatives’ panel of prosecutors at 4 o’clock in the afternoon of June 2,” Escudero stated in the letter.
As outlined in a previous Senate correspondence dated February 24, the House prosecution panel is expected to read the seven charges against Duterte in an open session.
Following the reading, the Senate will convene as an impeachment court at 9:00 a.m. on June 3, during which it will issue the summons and relevant procedural orders.
Earlier this month, incoming party-list representatives Leila de Lima (Mamamayang Liberal) and Chel Diokno (Akbayan) confirmed they will be part of the House’s prosecution panel.
Vice President Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives on February 5. The charges include grave allegations such as conspiracy to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., large-scale corruption, misuse of public funds, and involvement in extrajudicial killings.
The upcoming trial is expected to be one of the most politically charged proceedings in recent years, as it involves the country’s second-highest elected official and long-time political ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
